The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a Fort Pierce man died in a blaze today on the Florida's Turnpike in Osceola County.

A 2018 Chevrolet Malibu that was approaching Yeehaw Junction crashed, said Sgt. Kim Montes, FHP spokeswoman, in a news release.  Gerard Hall, age 63 has died.

A tractor-trailer driven by Rafael Contreras, 44, of Kissimmee, was driving next to the Chevy and attempted to change lanes. The Chevy was struck by the truck and the and was wedged under it.  Both vehicles slid off the highway, hit a guardrail int he center median.

Both vehicles caught fire and separated, the release states. Hall was unable to evacuate the car and died at the scene, the release states.

Contreras and the driver of the Malibu, John Sears, 58, of Fort Pierce, escaped and were taken to Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee with minor injuries, according to the release. All three men were wearing seat belts, the release states.

The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending, Montes said in the release.
