After many issues with accidents and delays the Indian River County Traffic and Engineering Department is moving forward with the road widening project.

The road will be open to local traffic only until Nov. 30 as road work gets underway, according to Indian River County's Traffic Engineering Department.

The closure will be on Johnston Road (43rd Avenue) north of Indrio Road in St. Lucie County.

During the road closure, 43rd Avenue south of Oslo Road will be closed to through traffic. Access to property owners, as well as emergency access, will be maintained at all times.

Detour roads within Indian River County include Oslo Road and 27th Avenue.

The work is part of the $23.95 million Indrio Road widening project from west of the Interstate 95 interchange to east of Emerson Avenue, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Work on this project includes: reconstructing the existing two-lane Indrio Road to a four-lane,divided highway with a raised median; constructing a 6-foot sidewalk along the
south side and a 12-foot-wide multi-purpose trail along the north side of Indrio Road; realigning Spanish Lakes Boulevard to connect with Koblegard Road; reconstructing Koblegard Road from Indrio Road north approximately .5 mile; and installing new highway lighting, signage and signalization.

This project is anticipated to be completed in spring 2019 and is designed to help with the many accidents with injuries and to keep people from having to sit through heavy rush hour delays.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Shuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck commented on this road construction:   “This has been an area of our county that has had many serious accidents with injuries over the last few years.  The widening of the road should help but it is still up to all drivers to pay attention when behind the wheel.   If you've been injured in an accident call my office for a free consultation.”.
