This morning a young child died in an accident according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP is investigating the deadly crash on U.S. 1 southbound at Highland Drive in southern Indian River County.

This was a 2-vehicle wreck occurred that occurred shortly after 6am.  Florida Highway Patrol commented that a child, about 3- or 4-years-old, died at the accident scene.

Sgt. Mark Wysocky said the vehicles were traveling southbound when a blue car hit the left, rear corner of Ford pickup truck.  The car lost control and turned over.

Wysocky said the child that died was lying on the ground when authorities arrived, but it's unclear if the child was ejected or taken out of the car.

Also, two adults were hurt and one other child were taken to Indian River Medical Center. Wysocky said their injuries were not life threatening.

Traffic was backed up on U.S. 1 both north and south due to this crash for almost 2 hours.  Eventually the northbound lane was reopened but the southbound lanes are still closed.

The name of the child has not been released. The cause of the wreck is unclear.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Shuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate death in Indian River County:   “This is a tragic accident to lose such a young life. Hopefully the police can determine the cause of this terrible incident to help bring closure to the family."
